Why should I wash my Apple?
What's on it that will come off? What's on it that won't?
This particular Apple (a Gala) was grown in America, allegedly)...
What's happened to it since the day it was picked?
If I'm gonna wash it, how much effort should be involved?
Should I use a brush to scrub it, or can I just 'polish' it by rubbing it on my
shirt like I did when I was a kid?
Here's hoping this doesn't wind up as a 'political' discussion...

Always eager to help an AVer in his quest for fruit and vegetable information, I believe that the apple travels a long way to our supermarkets these days.
First it may have bird poop on it or insecticide. It may have joggled around in a vehicle or a bin into which God only knows what has resided. Despite technology, your apple will have fingerprints all over it from the folks with whom it has come into contact.
The apples are sorted and washed - again, not out of contact with humans entirely. They may also go into a solution to keep them appearing and tasting free. Then they are often waxed (what is wax anyway?) and then those funny stickers are pasted on them.
Then they are bagged or shipped in bulk with chances to rub up against people, dirt, etc. When they get to the store, the Produce Manager arrays them in that big pyramid.
Then, along comes Grandma squeezing them to see if they are ripe, what kind they are and if that is a worm in that dark spot. Kids zoom by and then roll onto the (nice clean) supermarket floor - then more fingerprints if someone finally picks them up.
Then your dirty hands put them in a bag and off you go.
Scrub them - the more I read/write this, I think you should put them into the washing machine!
Maybe those old shirts had some magical powers - mine sure did! My friends scrub their fruit with soap and a nail brush. I dont know. I just know that I hate when I make baked apples and the wax melts and mixes in with the juice and melted butter and brown sugar.
