What is the reason/tradition behind wearing a garter and a garter toss?
Do you have to have one?
Also why do the guys pull the garter off with their teeth? I couldn't imagine my husband pulling my garter off with his teeth in front of my grandparents.

The tradition of it goes back to medievel times, when the wedding dress was considered good luck - so women used to try and steal/rip pieces of the brides dress, leaving it in tatters.
To try and combat this, brides began to throw things to distract the masses, including the garter and flowers."
i personally will not be doing this at my wedding. i'm morally opposed to it. i agree with you: i don't think this is something i want my parents, grand-parents, and other relatives and guests witnessing.
